Selecting a Topical Product

How to Choose a Topical Product

It is our contention that products that are full spectrum, whole cannabis plant extraction, are the top of the line.  Personally, we have found better outcomes for our clients when using a topical product that has THC and CBD along with other cannabinoids, terpenoids and flavinoids.

In Oregon, we are lucky to not only have amazing crops available to producers but also producers who are passionate about creating the best product there is. If, however, you are not lucky enough to live in a state that has legalized the sale of recreational cannabis, you next best option is a CBD-infused product.

Cannabis derived CBD with all of it’s terpenes and flavonoids is always our first choice when it comes to topicals, mainly because we prefer whole plant products.

In discussing isolates in regard to topicals, there is no research to date suggesting that one is more effective than the other. This is assuming the CBD isolate is combined with other essential oils and complimentary ingredients.

Massage Topical Recommendations

  1. Full Spectrum Cannabis Derived Products with both THC and CBD
  2. Cannabis Derived Full Spectrum CBD
  3. CBD Isolate product when combined with other complimentary ingredients (no synthetic ingredients)
  4. Hemp derived Full Spectrum CBD products (no synthetic ingredients)
  5. Hemp derived CBD Isolate Products

There simply hasn’t been any research on the differences when it comes to topicals. We will continue to update as more research becomes available.

How Much Cannabis, CBD or Hemp Do You Need in Products?

This is a tough question to answer definitively. First and foremost, every person has a unique Endocannabinoid System (ECS) and so what may work really well for one client may not for another.

Various different components contribute to each person's unique ECS, which makes it difficult to pinpoint.

We have done informal research on determining one's ECS. Trying to determine how much mg/ml, mg/oz or mg/massage of any given product is not easy. You will also need to take into account spot treatment vs. full body massage.

A helpful tip to consider...

"If the product doesn’t come with a certificate or analysis on the specific batch, the product likely doesn't have good quality assurance practices, and it’s likely not a product you want to spend your money on," says Trista Okel, the founder and CEO of Empower BodyCare, located in Portland, Oregon.
