Is Topical Cannabis Legal?

The answer is yes! But there are some guidelines you need to follow.

The Oregon Board of Massage Therapists (OBMT) allows for the use of topical recreational cannabis provided both the therapist and client are of legal age (21 years and older), the therapist has obtained written consent from the client, and the therapist wears latex gloves or some other barrier to apply the topical.

  • Therapists still may not apply any topical obtained by a medical marijuana card (either the therapist's or the client's), as it is not within the scope of practice for a massage therapist to administer any medications or prescriptions.
  • The sale of marijuana is highly regulated by the state, so therapists may not charge their clients any additional fees for the use of topical cannabis in a massage, nor can therapists sell cannabis topicals in their offices. The full OBMT policy statement can be found here.

People with marijuana may give it away or share it, but they can't sell it. You also can grow your own at home. In addition to growing four plants and possessing up to 8 ounces at home or 1 ounce away from home, anyone 21 and older can possess up to 1 pound of solid edibles, or about 10 chocolate bars; 72 ounces of marijuana-infused liquid, or a six-pack of 12-ounce sodas; and 1 ounce of marijuana extract. Marijuana comes in many forms: tinctures and lotions.

Extracts are a concentrated form of marijuana. Marijuana can legally be consumed at home, at your friend's house or another private place. We can purchase my product from a Dispensary and give it away to my clients.
